Glittermania

Glittermania

This is an exploration of a technique to produce glittery/ sparkly effects using standard effects. The package contains all projects shown in the images and video, including the Christmas baubles that respond to camera motion by ways of expressions. You will need Element 3D and Shapeshifter to open the respective files.

Note: Refer to the included PDF file for more detailed instructions in case you need to modify the main expression for your purposes. Otherwise the structure should be self-explanatory based on the names of the items and their usage.

Christmas Blinkies

Christmas Blinkies

This is a set of projects that produces chains of blinking lights in an assortment of shapes. This can be used in a graphical way to mimic the apeparance of a Christmas tree or other lighting such as is commonly put up around that time of year. A short overview of the possibilities can be seen in the video.

Because it is fully editable, all parameters and the appearance can be changed to your needs, so it is suitable for other festive graphics like chains of flags, strings of pearls or any shape you can think of. Some of the setups even feature some fake pseudo-dynamics so they can sway in the wind. Please refer to the included PDF for some more info.

IBL Toolkit

IBL Toolkit

While it’s quite common for 3D programs to support IBL (image based lighting) to simulate scene lighting based on realworld photographs, this is not always technically possible or feasible for plug-ins in After Effects, especially if they use OpenGL. This package tries to provide some of this functionality by using arrays of normal lights and arranging them in your composition and in addition sampling the color from input imagery. The setup contains a light dome setup to simulate 360 degree illumination as well as an area light for direct, soft lights that can easily be modified and customized using expressions. Refer to the included PDF file for more details and usage instructions.

IBL Toolkit

The second download re-uses the setup with a few extra controls for Plexus. It’s kind of a tec demo to illustrate how you can control large numbers of lights using pixel data in a pre-comp and easily create some pretty fancy lighting or other effects based thereon. This setup would just the same work with your favorite lens flare plug-inb or tools like Trapcode Lux.

GenArts Lens Flares Pack 3

GenArts Lens Flares

This is another collection of presets for the GenArts Sapphire 6 lens flare effect. It contains a selection of mostly colorful and intense flares. These flares require the Sapphire v6 plug-ins or the corresponding Edge plug-ins. Because they are provided in the specific GenArts preset format and not as After Effects projects they can also be used in Nuke, Final Cut Pro, Vegas or tools supporting OFX. For that, they need to be placed in the proper directories which e.g. on Windows is

C:\ProgramData\GenArts\Presets

They will then be accessible through the preset browser or flare editor, respectively.

GenArts Lens Flares Pack 2.5

GenArts Lens Flares

When creating lens flare presets such as these, there is always a phase of experimentation and research involved. You need to learn the features of the particular plug-in and find ways how to avoid or work around limitations just as you collect ideas for flares that might look cool. Some of that stuff never makes it into the final release, but nonetheless some people might find it useful if only to learn some tricks or derive their own inspiration. The below is such a collection.

Better BCC Flare

Better BCC flare

Since for all intents and purposes the default flare in Boris Continuum Complete 8 is pretty awful as are most of the presets, I sat down and created a tweaked version that much better represents something that could exist in the real world. See the before and after comparison images and make up your own mind.

Radar – Dradis – Light Grid

Dradis

This collection of 3 separate projects allows you to create any variation you can think of when it comes to radars, sonars and other scanning device screens. Because everything is determined with expressions, you need not worry about all that blinking and labeling. You just animate your targets and adapt the design, and the code does the rest. The package contains the reference designs illustrated in the clip below. The setup with the light grid can be produced by cloning a prototype light with the expressions and then adjusting the parameters of the grid. Similarly, the other setups can be modified by replacing the layer in teh timeline or modifying the pre-comps.
